Sector Rotation for Retail Traders (Without an Institutional Desk)

Sector rotation is not magic — it is capital moving to whatever is winning right now. Here is how to spot it early with tools any retail trader can use.

What sector rotation actually is

Institutions move billions between sectors based on macro conditions — falling rates favor small caps and tech, rising commodity prices favor energy, and so on. You will never front-run them. You can, however, notice within a few days that a rotation has started, and stop fighting it.

The three signals a retail trader can see

  1. Relative strength vs SPY. Divide a sector ETF's price by SPY's. If the line is rising, that sector is beating the market. Simple, and it works.
  2. Breadth inside the sector. How many names in the sector are above their 50-day moving average? A rotation into a sector shows up as breadth expanding before the ETF breaks out.
  3. Volume expansion on leaders. The top 3-5 names in a rotating sector see visibly heavier volume on up days than they did a month ago.

Worked example

Suppose XLE (energy) starts outperforming SPY. Two weeks in:

  • XLE/SPY line is up 4%.
  • 60% of energy names are above their 50-day, up from 30%.
  • CVX, XOM, and OXY are averaging 1.4× their normal volume.

That is a rotation, not a headline. Now you know where to fish for setups.

What to stop doing

  • Chasing yesterday's leader after a 15% run.
  • Buying a lagging sector because it "looks cheap." Cheap in a bad tape gets cheaper.
  • Ignoring the sector context of an individual name — a great setup in a dying sector is usually a bad trade.

What you will practice

  1. Pick 5 sector ETFs: XLK, XLF, XLE, XLV, XLY.
  2. Every Sunday, rank them by 1-month return vs SPY.
  3. Only take swing setups in the top 2. Only short in the bottom 2. Skip the middle.

Do this for a quarter. Your hit rate will change before your P&L does, and that is the honest signal it is working.
