Trading the AI Sector: A Playbook for Volatile Themes

AI-sector names move on rumor, keynote, and pipeline. Here's how to actually trade the theme without getting run over.

Trading the AI Sector

AI-sector equities (NVDA, PLTR, SMCI, AVGO, and the broader semi/software complex) share one property: they move on narrative faster than fundamentals can catch up. That makes them tradable — and dangerous.

The regime check

Before any AI-name trade, ask: is the sector in expansion (semis up, capex guidance rising) or digestion (multiple compression, insider selling)? Trading longs in digestion is where accounts die.

Setups that work

  • Post-earnings drift — clean beats + raised guide tend to run 5–10 sessions.
  • Pullback to 20 EMA — high-momentum names respect it until they don't.
  • News-catalyst continuation — new product / big customer / regulatory tailwind.

Setups that don't

  • Chasing a 3-day parabolic move without a pullback.
  • Fading strength "because it can't keep going."
  • Buying dips on names with fundamentals rolling over (check EPS revisions).
